I found this article on on craftster yesterday about "sugaring". Because I was so bored at work I read through the ENTIRE thread. I found that some of the tips were really useful but I don't suggest sitting there reading this thread for an hour unleses you really have nothing else to do. ;)

I think some of these definitely count as poor skills. Alternate uses for common household objects, like lemons, vinegar, coffee filters, and more. I'd heard some of these, but more than a few were new to me.

Good Kitchen gear can cost good money this tutoral from here shows how  to revamp cast iron found cheap at yard sales and thrift stores (I have my great aunts cast iron fry pan from 1947 and I use it all the time I rarely use anything else for roasting meat I can brown it on the stove and then just pop it in the oven and nothing sticks)

People have made canned food for generations. Is it really necessary to buy a canner to do this safely? Seriously, you'd think that grandmothers and great-grandmothers got it right without poisoning their families.

Advice and suggestions? I'm interested in making jams specifically, and perhaps vegetables I get for cheap at the farmer's market.

draino, (i don't know if it's an australian thing) is this stuff that comes in crystals, which technically you are supposed to mix with a cup of water and pour down a clogged drain. my (rented and falling apart) house is ancient, and the drains keep clogging insanely ( Read more... )

I am not sure about any of you. But around our house EVERYTHING has a 2nd life if possible. Sometimes 3 or 4 of them. It's partialy the hippy in us from my upbringing, and partialy becuase we feel it's what the earth would want us to do, then the other part is saving money.
